A large majority of F1's audience would probably agree that it did, but the MoreCore crew have had a look at it all, and have come to the conclusion that is was a pretty interesting season. These are our top 3 reasons why:
1- PIRELLI'S NEW TYRES
Pirelli's reintroduction to F1 in 2011 was a massive task for the tyre company to take on. They had little over 6 months to develop a tyre and in F1, 6 months is no time at all! The FIA stipulated that they wanted a tyre that would grain alot quicker than the Bridgestone tyres before them. Pirelli had their work cut out for them and exceeded expectations. The new tyres left everyone one a level playing field and the first half of the season proved extraordinary with different statagies used according to different teams expectations of the tyres. A "buzz- word" used frequently this season with regards to the tyres was "the cliff". This term was used when the tyres would lose performance, but at a rapid rate. This left very little room for error and caught many drivers out. The BBC'S Martin Brundle explains:
2. "That" race....!
I am pretty sure many would agree that this was up there with one of the best races of all time! A very very wet Canadian Gran Prix resulted in the least likely to happen....happening! Jenson Button, who had the worst starts imaginable, ended up last after contact with Fernando Alonso, resulting in a flat tyre and a broken front wing, eventually tearing through the field to make a last lap pass on Vettel for the win. Truly outstanding! This race also reinforced Michael Schumacher as a force to be reckoned with. Give the man a good car next year, and we'll see him back on the podium! Here are some brief highlights of that race, with a fitting tune.
3. The MASSA v HAMILTON saga!
After monitoring this intriguing battle all season, one could compare it to the Senna- Prost days. RUTHLESS would be a great word to describe it. Hamilton has made it very clear that his style and attitude towards racing is what Senna's used to be.."race to win, or don't race at all". A controversial statement that many consider to be reckless but here at the MoreCore HQ, we would have to agree. Lewis has had alot to answer for with regards to his driving style but we feel that if drivers didnt drive to win, F1 would lose its integrity. Senna hit the nail on the head by quoting " By being a racing driver you are under risk all the time. By being a racing driver means you are racing with other people. And if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver because we are competing, competing to win" Well said sir!
Lewis, did at times get things wrong, but still gave us an entertaining season squabbling with Massa. A troubled season for Lewis, lets see if he can bounce back in 2012.
So, all in all it was a great season. Despite the Vettle dominance, one has to admire his skill and swagger! Lets hope that the exclusion of the rear blown diffusers will level Red Bull's dominance. As for the bottom three teams, they will be into their 3rd season and there will be no where to hide! Bring on 2012!
Until next time folks! Keep that throttle pinned.
The MoreCore crew.
